Sunday 8^th November saw the third game of the Co Ed Softball Exhibition league take place. This time it was up to the Mustangs and Devils to face off. The two teams won their respective first matches and wanted to keep their momentum going and this together with the existing rivalry between the two teams resulted into a very excited match. Devils won this match after 7 extremely hard fought innings and 1 Hour and 43 minutes.

Devils had a better start to the game, taking an 8 – 3 lead after the first two innings. However Mustangs clawed back into the game in the third inning when they scored 4 unanswered runs to cut the Devils lead to just 1 run. It was at this point that Devils strong of their fielding experience took control of the game as for the next 3 innings Mustangs offence was shut down by some nice defensive work and in the process Devils scored another 5 runs which gave them a 13 – 7 lead going into the 7^th and last inning.

Mustangs staged another comeback in the 7^th inning, when first they shut down the Devils offence and than they scored the maximum possible 5 runs, for a final score of 13 – 12 for the Devils.

On Sunday 1^st November the second softball exhibition game took place at the Marsa baseball

& softball field. This time it was up to the new Devils team to square off against the Mellieha Curves. Weather conditions were once again ideal for the game of softball and the two teams battled it out for the entire 7 innings of the game which took 1 Hour and 30 minutes to complete.

The Mellieha team showed considerable improvement since playing their first game 3 weeks ago however this was not enough to beat a more experienced Devils team. Mellieha took a 1 – 0 lead during the first inning, however in the second and third inning the Devils bats came to live and this enabled the Devils team to take a 10 – 5 lead. This enabled the Devils to settle more into the game and thanks to some good defensive work and constant hitting Devils emerged victorious with the final score of 21 – 13.

On Sunday 8^th November, another exhibition game will be held at Marsa Sports Ground. This game will feature Devils against Mustangs. Game starts at 10.30 am. Anyone interested in taking part please contact Robert Mifsud on robmif@onvol.net.

Co-ed Softball Tournament - Day 1 - Sunday 11th October

After the successful organisation of the first International Co-Ed Softball Slow pitch Tournament organised in July by the Devils Sports Club which saw participation of teams from Germany and the US embassy and the Softball Co-Ed Fast pitch Tournament organised by Mustangs Baseball and Softball Club last September.
On Sunday 11th October MABS inaugurated the new softball season when two new teams Mustangs Softball, and Mellieha Northenders took the field for an exhibition game. It was a very nice day and the spectators surely enjoyed this 7 inning match (1 Hour and 25 minute). The two teams although still lacking from game experience showed a lot of enthusiasm and at times some very nice plays like the Mustang double play which ended the 7th inning.
As the result indicates Mustangs started the game very strongly sprinting to a 10 – 0 lead after two innings, However once the Mellieha girls shrugged off their opening day jitters and managed to settle down, the game evolved into a very balanced encounter and very pleasant to watch too. Unfortunately it was a bit to late for Mellieha to stage a comeback and Mustangs ended up winning the game 19 to 5.

Mellieha Baseball Player for Italian League

Mellieha Northenders’ Michael Bartolo has signed a one year contract with Baseball Club Oltretorrente of Parma. Bartolo will be leaving Malta to join his new team on the 7^th of April. Oltretorrente plays in the Italian Serie B baseball league.

This will be Michael’s second season playing abroad after he played with Jeka Baseball Club in the Netherlands baseball league in 2008. The 2008 and 2009 seasons have already been eventful ones for Bartolo, as besides playing for Jeka in the Netherlands he also played with the Maltese National team in the European Qualifiers during July 2008 in Antwerp, played a major role in Mellieha’s 2009 record year in which they completed the entire 2009 season without losing a game, and now will have his first experience in the Italian baseball league.

MARLON BORG PITCHES NO-HITTER TO KEEP MELLIEHA’S WINNING STREAK GOING

The National League resumed play this weekend, with the Mellieha Northenders facing the Devils on Saturday. The Northenders quickly took the lead in the first, after a series of hits lead to a couple of runs off Devils’ starter Charles Attard.

The Northenders extended their lead to three runs in the bottom of the third, after a Keith Bartolo double forced the Devils’ centerfielder to misplay the ball, allowing Bartolo to score. Mellieha’s starting pitcher, Marlon Borg was cruising along the Devils’ offense, pitching a gem from start to finish. Borg ended the game facing only seventeen batters in five innings, striking out seven batters and pitching the first no-hitter of the season. Borg also extended his consecutive scoreless inning streak to twelve.
The Northenders then took full advantage of a tired Attard in the fifth, scoring seven runs to win the game ten to nothing. Both Keith Bartolo and Marlon Borg went two-for-two in this game, while shortstop Michael Bartolo went three-for-four with two runs batted in.

Northenders stun the Mustangs once again
The Mellieha Northenders were full team last Saturday and defeated the Mustangs for the second time by more than 10 runs. This time the score was 19 to 4 in just 4 and a half innings.
Both teams starting pitchers got off to poor starts and were changed in the first inning. Mark Buttigieg for the Mustangs after having just pitched one of his best games against the Devils last week didn't have the same control in this game.
Mellieha out hit the Mustangs 7 hits to 2 in this game while the Northenders committed just one error compared to the Mustangs 13 errors. Clint Grima's top performance pitching also helped the Northenders prevent the Mustangs offence from even coming close to catching up.
2nd Division

Mellieha Rookies triumph over the Mavericks.
After the Mavericks surprised the Rookies in their first encounter, the Rookies came back to win this game 8 to 3.
In the first game of the season we saw a close battle between these teams which was mainly due to a string of Rookie errors but in this game the Rookies were more confident. The top of the Mellieha Rookies batting order did their job scoring 4 runs in the first inning and another 3 runs in the 3rd inning. In the second inning each team scored a run and the Mavericks only managed 2 runs in the 3rd and last inning. This wasn't enough to stop the Rookies. Silvan Busutil was the winning pitcher for the Rookies.

Claude Busuttil's 2 for 2 performance not good enough for Sting.

In yesterday's 2nd Division League game the Mavericks beat Sting 8-3 in the 1 hour game which lasted only 2 innings. Pitcher Steve Ritchie got the win striking out 5, walking 3 and allowing 2 hits.

The game had started off well for Sting when 1st batter Claude Busuttil hit a triple to left-field and subsequently scored on a wild pitch by Maverick's starter Steve Ritchie.

Sting also scored a 2nd run on a wild pitch. Yet the Mavericks kept them at two runs with Ritchie striking out 3 consecutive batters to end the top half of the inning.

In the bottom of the inning Sting starter Kenneth Bellizzi suffered on the mound as he immedeatly walked the 1st 3 batters faced, then giving up a 2 RBI single to Mavericks 3rd Base, who advanced to home on defensive errors for the Mavericks 4th and last run of the inning.

In the top of the 2nd Sting scored another run when Ronald Sillick ran home on a 2-out RBI double by Claude Busuttil, who was then left on base as Ritchie struck out Emmanuel Borg.

Jan Degiorgio took the mound in the 2nd inning, however he could not seem to find the strike zone as he walked the 4 batters he faced. Another pitching change was ineffective as the Mavericks soon scored the inning-limit 4 runs and ended the game with an 8-3 win.

MELLIEHA NORTHENDERS SHUT DOWN DEVILS TO GAIN FIRST PLACE

(3rd - 4th October 2008)

Last Saturday, the two teams that won their Opening Day encounters faced each other, with the winner eventually climbing to the top of the National League standings. Both the Northenders and the Devils had key players missing for this game, and a series of defensive errors from both sides erased the possibility of seeing an exciting pitching duel.

Starting on the mound for the second time this year was Clint Grima, who cruised through the game against the Mustangs the previous weekend; while making his pitching debut for the Devils was the newly-acquired Charles Attard. The Devils got off to a quick start, as centerfielder Claude Busuttil scored in the first run after a wild pitch in the dirt by Grima. Mellieha responded with three runs in the bottom of the first; taking advantage of a throwing error, which would have ended the inning without anybody crossing the plate to score.

The Devils then tied the game in the third, as two runs crossed the plate after Mellieha committed another error. Three errors committed by the Devils’ defense then allowed a couple of runs to cross the plate, to give Mellieha a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Devils allowed a couple of runners to get on base, again through errors, which were eventually driven in by third baseman Silvan Busuttil and by Grima, to give Mellieha a comfortable 8-3 lead. In the top of the fifth, the Devils came back to score a couple of runs to reduce the lead by three. However, Grima kept the Northenders comfy by cruising along the bottom half of the Devils’ lineup.

Mellieha then scored another run in the bottom of the sixth, again due to a fielding error. A late rally in the seventh was not enough for the Devils, as relief pitcher Michael Bartolo struck out the winning run at the plate, to give the Northenders a 9 to 6 win over the Devils.
Both teams combined a total of twenty-eight strikeouts, with Grima throwing fifteen and Attard throwing ten. Unfortunately, only four of the total fifteen runs were earned, as both teams performed poorly defensewise.

ROOKIES BEAT STING IN THREE INNINGS TO EARN FIRST VICTORY

The Rookies won their first game of the season by beating Sting eight to four in three innings of play. Starting pitcher Silvan Busuttil kept Sting’s offense off-balance all game, striking out four batters. The Rookies took advantage of Kenneth Bellizzi’s pitching debut, as the lefty could not settle on the mound during the course of the game. The Rookies got off to a fast start in the first, scoring four runs off a series of wild pitches by Bellizzi, giving them a four-nothing lead. Busuttil then cruised along the second inning, striking out two batters to keep the Rookies in the lead. Eventually they scored another four runs in the bottom of the second, which were enough to win the game. Sting rallied in the top of the third, but their rally was stopped by the Rookies defense to end the game.

NATIONAL BASEBALL LEAGUE AND 2nd DIVISION GET STARTED

In the first game of the season, the Devils got off to a good start when they beat defending champions, the Gozo Tornadoes 7-0 on Saturday. The Devils had several pitching prospects who took the mound during this game, inching them closer to consistency on the mound for the season. Thanks to the addition of several veteran players such as Charlie Attard, Shaun Chircop and Steven Galea, the Devils have a good shot of seriously competing this season.

The Mellieha Northenders, trying to forget last year’s loss to the Gozo Tornadoes at the National League Championships, could have not got off to a better start, beating the Mustangs 16 to 6 in just four innings. Starting on the mound for the Northenders was young Clint Grima, making his first-ever Opening Day start. Grima faced-off against veteran Mustangs’ pitcher Patrick Pace in a game that was played under glorious September weather.

The Mustangs went off to a fast start, scoring three times in the first, after a series of errors committed by the Northenders allowed runners to advance on the basepaths. Michael Bartolo, who along with his brother Keith was making his first start ever since returning back from his experience playing in Holland, scored in the first Northender run on a wild pitch by Pace. The Mustangs scored another run in the second to make the score 4-1, but Mellieha tied the game thanks to an RBI double by Ryan Borg and a two-run blast by Keith Bartolo that left the park for the first homerun of the season.

A couple of fielding errors in the top of the third allowed two Mustang runners to cross over the plate, putting the Mustangs on top 6-4 after the top of the third. However, the Northenders took advantage of a series of walks allowed by Pace and reliever Kevin Spiteri to rally for twelve runs in the bottom of the inning. The bottom of the third included a 2-RBI single by Borg, who finished the game bating 2 for 3, with three runs scored and four Runs Batted In (RBI).
Winning pitcher Grima finished off a perfect fourth inning, to hand over Mellieha’s first win of the season.

The 2nd Division League took off this weekend with an action-packed opener between the Mavericks and the Rookies, which ended 5-4 in favour of the Mavericks. This game was actually the first 2nd Division League game since 2006. The scope of this league is to help Maltese ball clubs develop there young talent, especially pitchers and catchers.

The Rookies got off to a quick start, taking the lead early in the game. Rookies' pitcher Mark Cauchi kept the Mavericks off balance throughout the course of the game, however the Mavericks rallied off during the last two innings in order to take a one-run lead. In the bottom of the last inning, a Sebastian Giudice tag at home plate nailed the tying-run out at the plate, after a fine play by Mavericks starter Steven Ritchie. This ended up being a very crucial play, as the following out determined the winner.

New Players to join the Devils for the 2008/09 Season

In the first game of the National League the Devils got off to a good start when they beat the Gozo Tornadoes 7-0 on Saturday. During their first game several new pitching prospects for the Devils took the mound at their first try at pitching, with some more innings of experience, these young arms will surely become important backups for the Devils pitchers in the National League.

Thanks to the addition of six experienced Gozitan players to the Devils roster, amongst whom Charles Attard, Steven Galea and Shaun Chircop, the Devils have a very strong team for this years league and seem to be very good contenders for this year's championship title.

08/09 National baseball League Scheduled to start this Weekend

The 2008/2009 MABS National Baseball League is scheduled to start this weekend at the Marsa Baseball Ground. Where the opening game of the season will be played on Saturday 27th by defending champions Gozo Tornadoes against the Devils home team.
The game will start at 1500 hrs.

The 1st Division League will also be continuing on Sunday 28th when the Mustangs will be playing the Mellieha Northenders. This game is also scheduled to start at 1500 hrs and will be played at the Marsa Baseball Field.

This year MABS has also introduced a 2nd Division League, in which 3 teams will be taking part; Sting, Mavericks and Rookies. This league will be commencing at Marsa on Sunday when the Rookies will be playing against the Mavericks at 1300 hrs.

So don't forget to come geared up in Navy Blue to support the Devils this weekend at the Marsa Baseball Field (next to the Marsa rugby field).

MALTA SURPRISES EUROPE AT THE EUROPEAN QUALIFIERS

Malta has just returned from the Baseball European Qualifiers where the tiny island’s representatives surprised Europe during their first international appearance ever. Fourth place is not unusual for a newcomer, but Malta progressed steadily during the Qualifiers held in Antwerp, Belgium. Team Malta faced favorites Belgium, Austria and Switzerland, in a rainy qualifier, forcing some games to be rescheduled. Malta’s handicap was that only twelve ballplayers could make the trip to Belgium, limiting manager Ray Bartolo’s depth in the line-up and pitching staff. Still, Malta played very enthusiastically and was impressive during the last two games. Malta’s best performance was during the 3rd place decider against the Swiss, having young Michael Bartolo on the mound. Malta collapsed only during the 8th inning, allowing the Swiss to score four runs to make it 12 – 6. During the Awards Ceremony held after the Qualifying Decider between Belgium and Austria, Malta was awarded the Sportsmanship Award, for its enthusiasm and perseverance. Team Malta was lead by veteran catcher Keith Bartolo, whose 6-for-12 performance was the second best of the tournament. He was also among the tournament’s leaders in many other offensive categories. Outfielder Clint Grima also took home a well-deserved trophy, after leading the tournament in stolen bases. Malta’s young talent should definitely blossom after this experience, as three-fourths of the team is still young and under the age of 25. The team’s performance was the perfect way of how showing MABS’ recent development.

First European Championship for Maltese National Baseball Team

The Baseball National team will be participating in the CEB (Confederation of European Baseball) Division Championship held in Antwerp, Belgium between the 9 July and 12th July 2008.
Newly appointed National coach Ray Bartolo called up the following players: Mustangs-Steve Ritchie, Mark Buttigieg and Patrick Pace; Gozo Tornadoes- Charles Attard, Steven Galea, and Mark Buttigieg; Mellieha Northenders- Mark Cauchi , Marlon Borg and Clint Grima; Jeka Baseball Club Breda Holland– Keith Bartolo and Michael Bartolo.
In this European qualifier Malta was drawn with Switzerland, Austria and Belgium.
This will be the first European Qualifier for the Senior Malta team, though the Under 21 team did participate in a European Championship two years ago. Seven players from that Under 21 team are included in this team.
This will also be the first time a Maltese Baseball Umpire will be taking part in a European Competition. Chuck Micallef will be Malta's official in his first Baseball official to umpire in an International tournament.

The Maltese National Baseball Team will be in Antwerp, Belgium, next week to participate in the European Cup Qualifiers. They will be playing against Belgium, Austria and Switzerland.

Michael Bartolo chosen for Major League European Baseball Academy

Mellieha Northender's Michael Bartolo, who is now playing with Jeka Baseball club, a 1st division team in Holland, was the first Maltese player ever to be chosen for the MLB academy since it started in 2005.

Michael, now just 17 years old was born in Malta and started playing baseball here in Malta. Other than achieving awards while playing for the Mellieha Northender's youth team, his talent was first seen in 2004 when he played with the National Cadet team in an international tournament in Italy when he was 14 years old, where he won 2 pitching awards and helped the Maltese Cadet team come home with two wins.

With Malta being so close to Italy, our young Maltese youths have a better opportunity to attend try-outs than if they lived in the USA, Central America or Asia, since baseball being more popular in these countries, there is much more competition.

The Academy is just one of the many programs Major League Baseball has in collaboration with National Baseball Associations in Europe, helping the continuous growth of Baseball world wide.

The Academy, which is held annually in Tirrenia, Italy will consist of up to 55 players from Europe and Africa who are between 15 and 19 years old . After a rigorous selection process ensuring that only the best young players from the two continents attend the Academy. These chosen players will work for three-weeks in an intensive Major League training environment featuring skills instruction, strength and conditioning and a complete schedule of games. The program will be run by top Major League instructors including former Major League All-Stars Barry Larkin, Bruce Hurst and Lee Smith.

Since 2005, 118 players from 21 European and African nations have attended the Academy with impressive results. 23 Academy players have signed professional contracts with Major League clubs, 11 players are now playing university baseball in the United States and many others have gone on to play significant roles with their respective national teams.

Michael Bartolo and his older brother Keith already are key players with the Maltese National team and next week will be in Belgium competing for the first time in the European Championship qualifiers.

Having the National team participating in the European championships puts Malta on the map with European Baseball and is another big step for the Maltese Baseball Softball Association (MABS) which just recently signed a co-operation agreement with the Federazione Italiana Baseball Softball (FIBS). The agreement, which came into effect on June 1, 2008 covers various areas of development and will also give opportunities for players, coaches and officials born in Malta to participate within the Italian Leagues with equal standing to Italian Nationals.

MABS signs co-operation agreement with Italian Federation

MABS has signed a co-operation agreement with the Federazione Italiana Baseball Softball (FIBS). The agreement, which came into effect on June 1, 2008 covers various areas of development and will also give opportunities for players, coaches and officials born in Malta to participate within the Italian Leagues with equal standing to Italian Nationals.
For our baseball and softball players this will mean that after having obtained MABS release they will be allowed to participate and play for Italian baseball and softball teams without being classified as a non Italian player. For umpires and other officials they will be able to participate as officials during Italian League games.
The agreement also stipulates that MABS may make use of Italian umpires, scorers and other game officials during MABS leagues and competitions.
An important part of the agreement also covers the Baseball/Softball academy in Tirrenia. The agreement stipulates that Maltese Nationals will be able to try out and if successful attend the academy.
During the coming months MABS will be developing a number of incentives aimed at encouraging our members to participate in the FIBS leagues.

GOZO TORNADOES 2008 BASEBALL CHAMPIONS

The Gozo Tornadoes could have not chosen a better time to bring the championship title back to Gozo. Marking the club’s tenth anniversary since its foundation. The Tornadoes managed to turn a disappointing season into a memorable one, after beating the Mellieha Northenders last Saturday. The Northenders, who had won the title four times in a row, were no match for the Tornadoes, the latter having found its dominant form during the last quarter of the season.

The 2008 regular season was not so encouraging for Gozo, as injuries affected the team’s performance throughout the first three quarters of the year. The team finished third place in the National League standings, dropping two games out of three to the Northenders and Mustangs, and allowing the first and only victory to the Devils. However, Gozo’s fortune turned during the last game of the regular season, as they beat the Mellieha Northenders twelve to four. The Tornadoes’ bats stayed alive during the playoffs, sweeping the Mustangs in two games in order to advance to the Championships. During the two game series, Steven Galea ended as the playoff’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), after recording two saves, and hitting seven for nine with four doubles, a triple and a home run. For the Championship decider against Mellieha, the Tornadoes went back to the past by putting veteran pitcher Jeff Tabone on the mound. The game ended nine to one in favor of Gozo, bringing back the championship after five years.
2008 has been one of the most memorable and active years in Gozo Baseball’s history. And the timing could not be any better, as Gozo won their fourth title on their tenth anniversary.

Gozo outclass Mustangs and will meet Mellieha in Finals

Just four days after the first playoff game, the Gozo Tornadoes and the Mustangs show downed for another nine innings, with Gozo winning two games to nothing. The Tornadoes have now made it to their eight consecutive Championship Finals, in their ten years of history. The game started off with the Mustangs scoring the first run of the game, however, Gozo fought back in the bottom of the inning, by creating a three-run rally with two outs. Shaun Chircop, Jeff Tabone and Gary DeBrincat started the rally by hitting three infield singles, with the latter driving in Chircop to tie the game. An infield error allowed the second run to cross the plate, while centerfielder Steve Ellis lined the ball to right in order to score the third run. Gozo scored another run in the bottom of the second, thanks to a double to left field by Steven Galea, which drove in a run. Starting pitcher Charlie Attard threw two scoreless innings in the second and third inning, keeping Gozo in front. Attard then drove in a run in the bottom of the third, to make the score five to one.
The Mustangs caught up in the top of the fourth, as fatigue started to hit Attard. Two runs crossed the plate to make the score five to three. Attard left the game with seven strikeouts thrown. But Gozo rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning, with Galea leading off with a triple to center field. Galea then came in to relief in the top of the fifth, and the Mustangs quickly jumped all over him, scoring five runs. The Tornadoes responded back, thanks to a couple of doubles by Galea and Chircop, scoring another two runs, and making the score eleven to eight.
With the score eleven to ten in favor of the Tornadoes, Ellis started off the bottom of the sixth with a single to left field. With two men on base, Galea hit his third double of the game, clearing the bases. Chircop and Tabone later hit a couple of singles to drive in a two more runs, to extend their lead by five.
In the bottom of the eight, with the score fifteen to twelve, the Tornadoes rallied once more to tame the Mustangs. Four runs crossed the plate in this inning, making the score nineteen to twelve. Galea then pitched a quick one-two-three inning in the top of the ninth, to earn his second playoff save.
Outstanding performances by Steven Galea, who went 4 for 5 with three doubles, a triple and a run batted in; Shaun Chircop who went 5 for 6 with a double and four runs batted in and Steve Ellis who went 3 for 6 with three runs batted in.
Game one of the Finals between holding champions Mellieha Northenders and Gozo Tornadoes will be held on Saturday 17th May followed by game two in Gozo on Sunday the 18th May. Both games will be at 14.00.

Marlon Borg pitches Mellieha to a win

Sunday’s Playoff game between the Northenders and the Devils saw Mellieha’s Marlon Borg pitching his team to a win; striking out 11 of the 20 batters he faced and allowing just 1 run in the 5-inning game.

The Devils showed their improvement during the first 3 innings of the game, only allowing 2 runs per inning, however this was not enough and the game was lost once again due to the 10-run difference rule which came into affect to stop the game after Marlon Borg’s, no out, Run Batted In single in the bottom of the 5th.

G.Tolu also pitched a good game, striking ou a career-high 5 batters. However the Devils seem to have some problems when fielding infield ground balls, in fact no outs were made at the bases, while quite a few were made on infield pop flies and long fly balls to the outfield.

During the game Mellieha’s offense was sparked by Steven Grima’s Home Run in the 3rd inning, as well as his Run Batted In double in the 4th and Marlon Borg’s Run Batted In double in the 1st. In all the Northenders connected for 9 hits, scoring 11 runs. While the Devils solitary run was scored by Jonathan Sammut on Silvan Busuttil’s single to right-field in the 2nd inning.

The two teams will now be facing each other again on Thursday to play the 2nd game of the Playoffs, in the case of the Devils winning the game, then a 3rd game would be played on Sunday (4th) as a decider. The winner of the Devils-Northenders match-up will be facing the winner of the Tornadoes-Mustangs playoff games.

The Tornadoes won Game 1 of the 2nd-3rd place match ups, 21-17. Patrick Pace (Mustangs) Hit two Home Runs.

Each team has played 9 games, they've all scored some runs, they all got some points... but now its time for the Playoffs to begin, with the 1st placed Northenders facing the last-placed Devils, tomorrow morning at 10:00 at the Marsa Baseball Field. The Gozo Tornadoes will then face the Mustangs at 14:00.

Gozo Finish Regular Season with a Win
The last week of the regular season ended on a positive note for Gozo, beating the reigning champions twelve to five in just seven innings.
The Tornadoes rallied on in the top of the first, scoring four runs in their first five plate appearances, thanks to consecutive singles by Rodney Debono, Gary DeBrincat and a bunt single by Charlie Attard. The Northenders replied back in the bottom of the third with one run, and another in the bottom of the fourth. After a decisive error by Gozo's defense, Mellieha rallied in the fifth, and tied the game off reliever Steven Galea. Galea came in for Attard with two outs in the fifth inning, after the latter was dominating on the mound, striking out nine batters in just four and two-thirds of an inning.
Gozo then fought back in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs off reliever Clint Grima, and then scoring the twelfth run in the top of the seventh in order to win the game. Reliever Galea did a fantastic job by throwing two scoreless innings, taking away any hope left for Mellieha to make a comeback. First baseman Gary DeBrincat had a stellar performance at the plate, going three for four with a double while rookie sensation, Joshua Gauci had a spectacular game at second base, making a diving catch in the bottom of the second to prevent extra bases, and had five putouts and four assists.
The Tornadoes will now face the Mustangs next Sunday to start their playoff season.

Devils come out hot against Mustangs but cool down half way.

The Mustangs then scored another 4 in the 3rd, however the Devils managed to end the inning on two pop-flies to shortstop and 3rd base. At the bottom of the inning Mustangs pitcher Mark Buttigieg was replaced by Steve Ritchie. The Devils once again scored no runs.After suffering 4 runs in the top of the 4th Giancarlo Tolu was substituted by Silvan Busuttil who ended the inning with 4 pitches. Steve Ritchie then replied by striking out 2 in the bottom of the inning, allowing no hits to once again shut down the Devils offense.
The 5th inning turned out to be the last one of the game, after the Mustangs managed to score 6 runs off pitcher Busuttil thanks to hits by most of their line-up. In fact the game stopped at 2 outs, since the 15 run-difference rule came into place when the score became 22-7. Mustangs End Northenders Winning Streak
The Mustangs continued where they ended in this game which was postponed by rain and kept scoring runs, putting pressure on the Mellieha team which seemed to be falling apart at times without Keith and Michael Bartolo there to lead the way! The Bartolo brothers are now playing for Jeka, a first division Baseball club in Holland.
The Mustangs started off by adding 3 runs bringing the score to 7-2 in the just the second inning. Then after a scoreless third inning both teams scored 2 in the fourth inning to make the score 9-4.
The fifth inning was not a good inning for the Northenders as the Mustangs kept hitting and with number of defensive errors helped the Mustangs score 9 runs. Mark Buttigieg and Trevor Shaw made an impact in the Mustangs line up with 2 RBIs (runners batted in) each and the score was then 18-4. Mellieha only managed to reply by scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the inning giving the Mustangs a 18-6 win on the 10 run difference rule.

Northenders come right back with a win in double header against Mustangs
Game 2 of the doubleheader was back to winning ways for the Mellieha Northenders as they won the second game 6-2 in seven innings.
This game which could have easily been a close game ended up with a win to Northenders mainly thanks to Marlon Borg who pitched a great game allowing the Mustangs only 4 base hits.
The Mustangs's young pitcher Mark Buttigieg got off to a bad start walking three Mellieha batters and allowing 4 runs to score before being replaced by Patrick Pace early in the game. Marlon Borg and the Mellieha defence then kept the score 4-0 at the end of the 1st inning.
The Mustangs in this game only managed to score one run in the second inning and another 1 run in the 6th inning. Mellieha scored another 2 runs in the 5th inning. This win for the Northenders will guarantee them them 1st place for the playoffs where they will meet the team finishing 4th. The 2nd and 3rd place teams will then play for a place in the best of three championship final.
This Saturday Mellieha will host the Gozo Tornadoes at 14.00 while Sunday the Mustangs will play the Devils at 10.00. Both games will be at the Marsa Baseball field.

Mustangs too strong for Gozo Rookies while Mellieha remain unbeaten

Last Saturday, the 3rd round of the 2008 National League opened with a rivalry game between the Gozo Tornadoes and the Mustangs. Gozo had three important veteran players missing for this game, and were replaced by young rookies Joshua Gauci, Manuel Grima and Dylan Xerri, who performed very well during the game. The game started off as an exciting one, with a score of 3 – 2 up to the middle of the fifth inning. The Mustangs then came out as the stronger opponent, beating the Tornadoes 12 – 2 in eight innings.

Mustangs’ starting pitcher, Mark Buttigieg pitched a fine game, allowing just two runs in five innings, and striking out a career high of six batters. Gozo’s starting pitcher, Steven Galea also pitched well in four frames, allowing only three runs to cross the plate. The Mustangs jumped over Gozo’s Mark Buttigieg, after coming in to relief for Galea. Buttigieg allowed six runs in two innings. Mustangs’ first baseman Ruben Gatt had a productive game, going three for five with two runs batted in and a stolen base. Veteran third baseman Patrick Pace also had a good offensive game, going two for four with a double, one run batted in and a stolen base. Gozo’s Buttigieg drove in the only two runs, thanks to a two for four performance.

The final score of Sunday's game; 12-0 in 4 innings for the Mellieha Northenders, does not really give any credit to the visible improvement that the last-placed Devils have made in the past weeks.

In the same innings the top 4 batters of the Devil's line-up had a hit apiece against Northender's pitcher Mark Cauchi, who started in his first game as a pitcher. However it was a lack of aggressiveness when running the bases that kept the Devils from scoring any runs.

Unfortunately the home's team defense made 3 costly errors in the top of the 3rd and this seemed to affect Tolu's pitching as he lost concentration walking 3 batters in a row, the Northenders then ended up scoring another 9 runs. In the bottom of the 3rd inning the Northender's infielders worked to get 3 quick outs, ending the inning with a double play on Robert Mifsud's ground ball to shortstop Mike Bartolo.

The last inning was once again a no run affair for both teams and the game was stopped at the start of the 5th inning because of the run-difference rule. This win was the 6th in a row for last year's champions, however it still has to be seen how much the Bartolo's brothers transfer to Dutch 1st Division team Jeka Breda will have on the winning streak of the team.

The Mustangs have now climbed up to second place in the standings with only two games left. The Mustangs will now face the undefeated Northenders next Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 13.00 to make up for a game that was postponed due to rain while the Devils will travel to Sannat Gozo on Sunday.

Yesterday marked the start of the 3rd and final round of the Maltese National Baseball League. Both games played were stopped cause of the mercy rule which unfortunaley seems to be the case in most of the games played so far.

The Mustangs beat the Gozo Tornadoes 12-2 in 8 innings, the mercy rule coming into affect since the Mustangs had 10 more runs than the Gozitans by the 9th inning.

While Sunday's game was won by the Northenders 12-0 in 4 innings against the Devils, the 10-run difference rule coming into affect at the start of the 5th inning, hence stopping the game.

Next weekend the Devils will be playing Gozo in Sannat at 14.30 on Sunday, while the Mustangs and Northenders play a double-header on Saturday at the Marsa to make up for the 2nd round game which was suspended due to the rain.

Mellieha Northender’s Bartolo brothers to play in Dutch 1st Division

Keith and Michael Bartolo will be playing for the Jeka Baseball club in Breda. Charles van der Meijs General Manager for the Dutch Division 1 Jeka Baseball Club was recently in Malta to finalise the details of the transfer of the Bartolo Brothers from the Mellieha Northenders to Jeka.
Keith and Michael Bartolo who will be playing in the Dutch 1st division, considered one of the top leagues in Europe, were presented with the Jeka jerseys during a ceremony on the 26th of March at the Mellieha Sports Club.
This will be a great experience for them and will be give a boost to the National team, which is preparing for the European Qualifiers in Antwerp Belgium this July. Keith and Michael won’t have to travel far from Holland to meet their Maltese teammates as they will play against Switzerland, Belgium, Austria and San Marino in their group.

Tee Ball Sessions to start in April
What is ‘Tee ball’ ball?
Tee Ball is a game for boys and girls, based on Baseball and is intended as an introduction for young players to develop baseball or softball skills and have FUN.
In Tee Ball, there is usually no pitcher, except perhaps for defensive purposes. The ball is placed on an adjustable tee on top of the home plate at a suitable height for the batter to hit the ball. Most of the other rules are similar or identical to those of baseball, though the game is played on a smaller field.
Tee ball is all about having FUN while learning the basics without the competitiveness.
MAB’s qualified coaches will be organizing ten Tee Ball Spring sessions for children 5yrs to 9yrs old. Starting on Saturday 12th April from 11.00 to 12.30 at the Marsa Baseball field. European Baseball Congress

This weekend 27-30 March, MABS will be hosting the 2007 Annual Congress at the Maritim Antonine Hotel in Mellieha, This is the first time the official event will be held in Malta where delegates from countries all over Europe will be visiting. CEB, the Confederation of European Baseball is the governing body for European Baseball and will be discussing important issues on the agenda. One of the topics will be the organizing of the 2009 Baseball World Cup, which will be held in Europe. Maltese Baseball coaches will also benefit from this event as a coaching clinic will be held by Pat Doyle from Major League Baseball while he is here for congress.

Mustangs shutout the Devils as Northender’s winning streak continues following a string of errors from the Gozo Tornadoes

The Devils performance in their game against the Mustangs last Saturday wasn't even close to how they played the Tornadoes last week, where they scored 6 runs. This time their opposing team scored 16 runs too, but the feat took the Mustangs just 2 innings and 1 hour.

We saw a good performance by Mustangs pitcher Mark Buttigieg, who had some control problems last season but showed improvement in this game. The Mustangs bats also came alive to the despair of the Devils who have been improving offensively lately.

The Devils managed to get hits from Claude Busutil and Robert Mifsud but the rest of the line up was rather stopped by Mark Buttigieg’s pitching or by a solid Mustang defence.

The Mustangs catcher Shawn Ritchie hit a pop-fly straight to the pitcher to start off the bottom of the 2nd inning, but the Mustangs then went through the next 8 batters, who each scored a run, before the Devils managed to make the 2nd out, on another fly-ball by Ritchie. After facing another 4 batters, Devil’s pitcher Busuttil was replaced on the mound by John Farrugia, who unfortunately did not manage to limit the damage. In fact 4 runs were scored before Reuben Gatt, was tagged out at home for the last out of the inning.

But the damage was done and the game had to be stopped once again due to the run-difference rule with the final score 16-0.

Home advantage didn’t favor the Gozo Tornadoes on Sunday as they went down 16-6 to the Northenders who remain unbeaten. This game seemed like it could have gone either way up until the 8^th inning when the Northenders scored 3 runs and then another 7 runs in the 9^th inning.

What seemed to be a battle between the starting pitchers initially with Michael Bartolo for the Northenders striking out 10 batters and Charles Attard striking out 8 ended up in Mellieha’s favor as the Gozitan defense made some vital errors in the 4^th inning and again in the late innings.

Steven Galea had 2 hits from his four appearances at the plate for Gozo, one of them a triple.

Mellieha’s Matthew Grech also hit a triple with a line drive down the third baseline. Ryan Borg then got a base hit driving in Matthew Grech to score the first run of game in the third inning.

Steven Galea replaced Charles Attard in the 5^th inning after his pitching seemed to suffer when he previously collided with a Mellieha player running the bases.

In the bottom of the 6^th inning the Northenders, with the score in 6-3 in their favor, brought on Marlon Borg to pitch relieving Michael Bartolo.

The Northenders weren’t exactly on top of their game either as they had 7 errors in this game but still remained on top throughout as they were that little bit better, up until the last few innings where Gozo gave up too many runs committing a total of 12 errors.

Mustangs beat Devils in just one hour

The Devils performance in their game against the Mustangs last Saturday wasn't even close to when they played the Tornadoes last week, scoring 6 runs. This time their opposing team scored 16 runs too, but the feat took the Mustangs just 2 innings and 1 hour.

The top of the first started well for the visiting team (Devils) with 2nd Base Claude Busuttil hitting a single off starter Mark Buttigieg. Unfortunately for the Devils, he was then out on the next play when Sillick hit a grounder to 3rd base. The Mustangs then quickly ended the inning, turning a pop-fly to shortstop by Silvan Busuttil into a double play, when Shaw threw to first to catch Sillick off the base.

In the bottom of the inning, starting pitcher for the Devils, Silvan Busuttil managed to keep his pitch-count low; only giving up 2 walks and because the Mustangs were hitting him on first-pitch strikes. Although the Mustangs nearly went through their whole line-up, they only scored 3 runs, thanks to doubles by Ritchie and Pace and a single by Miranda.

The 2nd inning also started off well for the Devils, with Robert Mifsud reaching first on a base hit. But the next play nearly mirrored that of the first inning, Mifsud was out at 2nd when Bellizzi hit a grounder to 3rd base Patrick Pace. Buttigieg then struck out the next two batters faced to end the top of the 2nd.

Catcher Shaun Ritchie hit a pop-fly to the pitcher to start off the bottom of the inning, but the Mustangs then went through the next 8 batters, who each scored a run, before the Devils managed to make the 2nd out, on another fly-ball by Ritchie. After facing another 4 batters, Busuttil was replaced on the mound by John Farrugia, who unfortunately did not manage to limit the damage. In fact 4 runs were scored before the team caught Reuben Gatt, taking the risk, stealing home for the last out of the inning.

But the damage was done and the game had to be stopped once again due to the run-difference rule, which always seems to be the reason for the Devils ending their games prematurely.

Rain spoils Mustangs chances of breaking the Mellieha Northenders winning streak as Gozo Tornadoes twirl the Devils

Saturday’s game saw the Northenders hosting the Mustangs with the Bartolo brothers missing from their side. Keith Bartolo along with younger brother Michael were at a Baseball training camp in Portugal and a trail to play for Jeka Breda; a first division team in Holland.
Keith was first seen by Charles Van der Meijs, when he was here in Malta last year for a Baseball promoters course organized by MABS [Maltese Baseball Softball Association] together with CEB [European Baseball Federation] and invited him to visit his club Jeka Breda in Holland.
This was sure to be the Mustangs best opportunity to break the Northenders winning streak. Unfortunately for the Mustangs though the rain wouldn’t allow the game to go further than the 2nd inning and had to be held up with the Mustangs leading 4 runs to 2.
In Baseball though, if the game is stopped due to rain without playing at least 5 innings the game will continue on another day with the same score as they left off, the same players in the line up as started, same score with same runners on base.

Sunday was nothing but sunshine for the Gozo Tornadoes as they hosted the Devils at Sannat field.
The Devils still without a win managed to score the most runs from the games they have played so far but unfortunately also gave away too many runs due to defensive errors and poor pitching. The Devils will continue to suffer as their pitchers fail to find the strike zone and give away runs by walking batters. On the other hand the Devils have improved offensively as they are hitting the baseball more and have been more aggressive while running the bases.
The Gozo Tornadoes dominated the game and 16-6 was the final score in 5 innings with another big hit from Shaun Chircop, a double from Mark Buttigieg, hits from Jeff Tabone, Charles Attard and most of their line up batting well.
The Devils offense was led by Robert Mifsud’s performance - sending the ball into centre field for double in the third inning.- Hits from Ronald Sillick and Malcolm Cross also helped bring in some runs for the Devils.

Gozo beat Devils 16-6 at home

Yesterday's game played in Gozo was won by the home team 16-6 in just 4 innings. The Devils played well enough to score 6 runs, earning a point in the standings. However they made several fielding errors, which had they been avoided might have resulted in a closer final score.

Gozo starting pitcher Buttigieg faced just 3 batters in the 1st inning and although Devils' catcher Sillick reached 1st base on a an infield hit, he was soon caught stealing 2nd. Buttigieg then struck out Busuttil and forced out Tolu on a soft grounder to 1st. In the bottom of the inning the Gozitans only had 2 hits, yet managed to score 6 runs by taking advantage of 4 walks, some throwing and fielding errors and by stealing many bases.

The 2nd inning faired better for the Devils who scored 3 runs; on a 1 out hit by outfielder Malcolm Cross and on two bases-loaded walks. The Devils also managed to limit the Gozitans to just 4 runs, after walking the first two batters faced starting pitcher Busuttil was substituted by Tolu, who gave up a 2 run batted in double to Mark Buttigieg, who then scored on a passed ball. The first out was made on a fly out, then a strike out. Jeff Tabone, playing in his first game this season hit a single for his 2nd hit of the game and after stealing 2nd and 3rd scored on an infield hit by rookie outfielder Dylan Xerri, who was tagged out to end the inning during the next play.

The 3rd inning ended with a score of 14-6. Robert Mifsud led off with a double to centrefield and Claude Busuttil reached 1st base on a hit by pitch. Then on a missed popfly to 2nd, Mifsud was tagged out at 3rd while Busuttil and Kenneth reached 2nd and 1st safely. A walk to Cross then loaded the bases and Busuttil scored on a passed ball. Two consecutive walks then scored the runner at 3rd. Sillick's RBI single scored the final run for the Devils. The Tornadoes 4 runs were scored by Rodney DeBono on a 1-out single by Charles Attard who then scored on a hit by Mark Buttigieg who also scored on a double by 1st base Gary DeBrincat who scored on a passed ball after stealing 3rd. However the Devils managed to end the inning with a double play; fly-out to the pitcher who threw to 2nd to catch J.Borg off the base, ending the inning.

Pitcher Mark Buttigieg was changed with Jeff Tabone in the 4th inning who dominated the Devils batters by striking out two and forcing out one on an infield hit . Shaun Chircop started off the 4th inning well for the Gozitans, hitting a long triple to centrefield and scoring on a throwing error by 1st base Kenneth Bellizzi. Debono then reached 1st on a single and after stealing 2nd and 3rd scored on a single by E.Borg. After a walk to Attard, Borg was tagged out at home for the first out. Buttigieg then struck out swinging and DeBrincat hit a fly ball to the pitcher to end the inning.

The 2 runs scored by the Gozitans in the 4th inning were all they needed to win the game, since the game was then stopped due to the 10 run difference rule in the 5th inning.

Mustangs win against Gozo Tornadoes while Mellieha Northender’s winning streak continues

What was expected to be a close game between the visiting Gozo Tornadoes and the Mustangs, turned out to be a lopsided 13 – 3 drubbing in favor of the Mustangs.
The Mustangs overpowered their opponents with a strong pitching performance and an equally impressive batting performance from most of their lineup. Third baseman, Steve Ritchie topped the team in offense with his 3 for 4 performance. He now leads his team with 5 hits on the season. Mustang rookie second baseman, Sebastian Giudice ignited the offense early on with a hard hit RBI double in the second inning. He also led the team with two stolen bases.
Gozo were unable to score except for the 3rd inning bringing in 3 runs and taking advantage of a few Mustang defensive errors.

Northenders keep up winning streak to start Round 2

The Northenders started off the 2nd round of the Maltese National Baseball League just as they left off; with another win. In fact in a two hour game which lasted 4 innings, last year’s champions only needed 14 runs to defeat the Devils for the 2nd time this season.

Silvan Busuttil, Devils starting pitcher, managed to limit the Northenders to just 3 runs in the 1st inning, striking out Matthew Grech to end the top of the 1st. The Mustangs won their second game of the season against Gozo, 13-3, moving on level points with them in the standings. Mellieha Northenders undefeated after first round

Mellieha’s talented young pitcher Mike Bartolo knew Sal Varriale , a Major League scout for the Cincinnati Reds, was watching him last Sunday and both teams realized it was going to be a tough game for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs only managed to get 4 hits in this game before going down 17-1 with the 15 run difference rule in just 4 innings. This was mainly due to Mike’s pitching performance but the Northenders also gave him full support when they were up to bat.
We will have to wait and see if Mike receives a call for trials this summer but in the meantime he showed great confidence on the mound and hit his first homerun with his 2nd time at bat. If Mike would get a call and signs with a club it would be a great accomplishment not only for Mike and the Mellieha Northenders but also for his father Ray and Maltese Baseball Association. Ray Bartolo is a pioneer within Maltese Baseball and played a big part of baseball starting in Malta.
The Mustangs found it difficult to stop the Northenders from scoring 17 but at least stopped a shut out game by managing to score their only run with an RBI hit from Mark Buttigieg in the bottom of the 4th inning.
Keith Bartolo, Mike’s older brother also hit a homerun in this game making this his 3rd homerun, one in each game played. This Saturday at 13.30 the Mustangs will be facing 2nd place Gozo Tornadoes at Marsa and Sunday at 10.00 the Devils will be up against the Northenders also at Marsa.For more information on Baseball or Softball check out http://www.baseballsoftballmalta.org/

Mustangs beat Devils 16-5 as Mellieha battle Gozo for the win

Saturday’s game saw the Mustangs defeat the Devils 16-5. This turned out to be the Devils best game so far, managing to score 5 runs, keeping the Mustangs scoreless for 2 innings and only 3 runs difference coming into the 5th inning with the Mustangs ahead by 8 runs to 5. Then the Mustangs batted in 5 runs in the 6th inning, leaving the Devils with their 3rd consecutive loss of the season, yet still showing a great deal of improvement in each game played so far. The Mustangs on the other hand are proud of last years ‘Rookie of the Year’, Kevin Spiteri, making his debut pitching for his first win.

It was a cold Sunday afternoon as the Gozo Tornadoes hosted the Mellieha Northenders at the Sannat field. Although the cold weather did not help the pitchers, it might have helped both teams' offence since both sides hit homeruns. Gozo took the early lead in the 1st inning with an inside-the-park homerun by Shaun Chircop. The Northenders answered and went ahead 4-1 in the 5th, after taking advantage of a few walks given up by the Gozitan starting pitcher Charles Attard. Northenders then went up 6-1 in the top of the 6th, and 7-1 in the top of the 7th thanks to a homerun by Mellieha’s slugger Keith Bartolo. In the bottom of the 8th, Gozo rallied, scoring a run off Mellieha pitcher Marlon Borg and then with the bases loaded Shaun Chircop did it again hitting a grand slam to make the score 7-6. But with the winning run in scoring position and the pressure on Mellieha, Borg held on to strike out Rodney Debono for the final out and the game winner for the Northenders.

Gozo breeze past Devils; scoring 15 in 5.

Yesterday's win was a great start to the season for Neil Newton's Gozo Tornadoes, who won their opening game over the Mustangs by forfeit and therefore were playing for the first time this year.

In the first inning starting pitcher for the Devils, Silvan Busuttil struck out 1 but walked 4, yet with 3 Gozitan runners left on base the Devils managed to finish the inning fairly well, only allowing 3 runs. Their offense however, was no match for Charlie Attard who finished the inning with just 10 pitches.

During the second inning the Gozitans went through their whole line-up for the second time in the game, and scored 4 runs, mostly on full-count walks. Although Busuttil forced two infield hits which were fielded into ground outs by Devils' rookie, Jan Degiorgio, he was replaced by John Farrugia towards the end of the inning. In the bottom of the inning Attard was once again a dominating force against the home team, striking out 2 and walking 1; who was later picked-off at first.

Despite 2 hits, including Attard's double, the Tornadoes only scored 1 in the top of the third, which fielding-wise turned out to be the Devils' best and shortest inning of the season so far. (1 K, 1 GO and 1 FO). The inning ended when Attard struck out the last 3 of the Devils' line-up with just 12 pitches.

Another eventful inning followed for the Tornadoes who scored 6 runs on 3 hits and 5 walks, stranding 3 on the bases. After which the Devils' offense was once again shut down by the Gozitans.

At 14-0 the game was still not over and Gozo faced Giancarlo Tolu during the 5th inning in their last at-bats of the game. 3 hits were all they needed to score the run which would end the game at 15-0 due to the 'run-difference rule'.

The Devils were no match for a Gozitan team who although are under new management, have three season wins under their belts (2001, 2002, 2003). They (Devils) have shown some improvement on the field yet unfortunatley still haven't learnt how to hit the faster pitchers of the league. They will be facing the Mustangs next, who still have to play their first game, after this morning's game against the Northenders was postponed due to the bad weather.

Devils vs Mellieha - 2/02/2008

Mellieha Northenders start off season with a win.

This Saturday saw the start of the National Baseball League as reigning champs Mellieha Northenders took on the Devils for the opening game of the season.

Starting pitcher for Mellieha, Marlon Borg struck out the Devils’ offence with 11 pitches in the top of the first inning, after which the Northenders got to go through their whole line-up at the plate.

Devils’ pitcher John Farrugia, starting in his first game ever at this position, couldn’t seem to settle down and was substituted after facing the first five batters of Mellieha’s line-up. Silvan Busuttil faired slightly better and after a walk settled down quickly to end the inning. However the damage was done and Mellieha started off the 2nd Inning with a 6 run lead.

More of the same followed in the 2nd inning when Borg struck out two Devils and eliminated another on a soft-hit ground ball to the mound.Unfortunately Busuttil couldn’t limit the damage during the bottom of the 2nd and after suffering 9 runs and only eliminating 2 batters he had to surrender the mound to Giancarlo Tolu, who finally closed the game when he struck out the fifth batter he faced.

In a game that ended with a score of 18-0 it was obvious that it was the Northender’s experience that won against a team, who although are improving considerably, still have a lot to learn on the field of play.

Northenders start title defence with Devils match

The first official pitch of the National League will be thrown on Saturday afternoon when reigning champions Mellieha Northenders face Devils at the Marsa baseball field. Both teams retained the core of players from last season with Devils adding a couple of new faces. The latter have shown signs of improvement in pre-season but one still has to see whether it will be enough for them to stop the Northenders who have the bulk of national team players within their ranks. Northenders captain and catcher Keith Bartolo, with a strong arm and a hard-hitting bat to match, will be keeping the Devils on their toes as usual. He is one of Malta's best batters. Like his father and coach, Raymond, Keith has been an inspiration to the team at Mellieha ever since the club was founded. The other match of the weekend will be played in Sannat on Sunday afternoon.Hosts Gozo Tornadoes will be looking to start on a sound footing by beating visitors Mustangs.Tornadoes are marking their 10th anniversary this year.
